End of Life Care review - The Race Equality Foundation

07/10/2015

The Race Equality Foundation are carrying out some research on the experiences of care for people who are at the end of life. This is part of a review of End of life care across the UK being done by the Care Quality Commission. This piece of work can be used to inform the inspections conducted by the Care Quality Commission, and they will be part of the evidence base in the report.

They are looking to specifically talk to people from black and minority ethnic communities to understand their specific experiences of the system in Newham. They are also looking to speak to people who are homeless or are in the criminal justice system. There is more information about the work here: http://www.raceequalityfoundation.org.uk/cqc/end-of-life

It is appreciated that this is a sensitive topic and not everyone who is at the end of their life may be willing to partake in research at such a vulnerable stage. Thus, they are also speaking with families and carers of loved one who have passed within the past 18 months.

The research will comprise of either individual semi-structured interviews, or talking to groups (for example bereavement support groups) if appropriate. You'd be asked about your experiences of end of life care, particularly focusing on the quality of care. These interviews would be recorded and used to write up reports. The recordings will be destroyed at the end of the work, and anonymity will be preserved in the reports to CQC. The information supplied will form part of the evidence used to write the review.

It is very important we capture the voices of those on the fringes of society. If you know of anyone who can partake in this piece of work it would be great to hear from you. Please get in touch with Viola Petrella via email at Viola.Petrella@healthwatchnewham.co.uk or calling 020 3866 2951.
