Enter and View: The Chase

This Enter and View (E&V) visit aimed to assess the quality of the supported living service at The Chase, Forest Gate, in the London Borough of Newham.

Summary

The aim of the visit was to review current practices, identify areas of good practice, and offer suggestions for improvement where necessary. This visit was agreed in consultation with the London Borough of Newham.

During our visit, we spoke with the Manager, Senior Support Worker, two support workers, and three relatives. We also observed the environment and interactions between staff and residents to gain an understanding of the service provided.

Key Findings

  • Staffing: The home supports 9 residents with a 1:3 staff-to-resident ratio and additional 1:1 support where needed. Staff are well-trained in safeguarding, first aid, and fire safety.
  • Care Planning: Residents’ care plans are reviewed regularly, with input from residents where possible. However, some relatives reported limited involvement in this process.
  • Resident Engagement: Residents have access to a variety of activities, including arts and crafts, day outings, and physical activities. Staff encourage social interaction among residents.
  • Relatives’ Feedback: Relatives expressed satisfaction with the care and noted good communication, with opportunities for residents to maintain contact with family through video calls.

Recommendations

  • Care Plan Involvement: Improve communication with relatives about care plan updates and ensure they are more involved in the process.
  • Activity Variety: While activities are varied, some residents would benefit from more tailored options based on individual preferences.
