Enter and View: Look Ahead

This was an announced Enter and View (E&V) visit as part of a planned strategy to assess the quality of supported living homes in the London Borough of Newham.

Summary

The visit aimed to evaluate the quality of care and support provided to residents, identify areas of good practice, and suggest improvements where necessary. Ensuring that supported living environments offer a high standard of care is essential in promoting dignity, independence, and well-being for residents.

During the visit, Healthwatch representatives engaged with the manager, four support workers, and two residents. Structured interviews were conducted with staff, residents, and relatives to gain a well-rounded understanding of the service.

Key Findings

  • All residents have personalised care plans, reviewed every six months, with input from both residents and their families.
  • Staff were knowledgeable about safeguarding policies, though there was some uncertainty regarding residents' understanding of safeguarding due to communication barriers.
  • Residents have access to healthcare services, engage in exercise activities such as dancing, and have opportunities to personalise their living spaces.
  • Mealtimes are resident-led, with individuals shopping for and preparing their own meals, supported by staff when needed.
  • There is no designated activities officer, but residents are encouraged to participate in leisure activities of their choice.
  • Internet access is available in communal areas, and staff support residents in staying connected with family and friends.
  • Staffing levels are maintained at a 2:1 ratio, ensuring round-the-clock care.
  • Staff receive comprehensive training, including mandatory and specialist courses.

Recommendations

  • Additional safeguarding training to help staff effectively support non-verbal residents in understanding their rights.
  • Consider appointing or designating a staff member to facilitate structured activities.
  • Provide a designated rest area for staff to enhance workplace well-being.
  • Regularly review feedback mechanisms to ensure residents feel heard and supported.
