Looking Back: A Successful Community Safeguarding Event in Newham

Councillor Ann Easter kicked off the event by emphasising the importance of listening to real experiences and understanding the challenges faced by individuals in the community. This set the tone for a day of open and honest conversations.
Julie Pal, CEO and Co-Chair of Healthwatch Newham, highlighted the need for greater awareness around safeguarding, particularly in terms of what it looks like and how to report it. "When we went out into the community, people didn’t know what safeguarding was, what it looked like, or how to report it," she shared. This insight underscored the urgency of ongoing education and support.

Dr. Adeola Agbebiyi, Assistant Director of Public Health, presented eye-opening data on safeguarding inequalities in Newham. She pointed out that some communities, particularly those of Pakistani and Eastern European heritage, were underrepresented in safeguarding referrals despite their presence in the population. This critical data helped attendees understand the need for more inclusive approaches in safeguarding.

Claire Solley, Director of Quality Assurance and Safeguarding at Newham Council, provided insight into how the council responds to safeguarding concerns, reinforcing the importance of a comprehensive approach to ensuring safety and support for all residents.
It was a day of collaboration, learning, and action. Healthwatch Newham is committed to continuing these important conversations and creating a safer Newham for all.
